The Bale Mountains in the Oromia region southeast of the Rift Valley offer humid hills, moorlands and two mountain peaks over four thousand meters high: The Tullu Dimtu and mount Batu. Wild animals are found there, such as the mountain nyala, the Ethiopian wolf, Menelik’s bushbuck, the simian red fox, giant mole rats, and some fifteen endemic bird species. Because of the birds, the Bale Mountains belong to one of the three officially designated endemic bird areas of the country.
